911 What's your emergency?

911 What’s your emergency?

To call or not to call 911 that is the question.

First and foremost, I want to thank everyone that has emailed or called over the last month checking up on me.

Sorry it’s been a while since I have even been able to check my blog much less make an entry for it.

It’s been a crazy month and on 3 different occasions I had to make a decision to call or not to call 911.

I now know how our patients feel first hand. It was not a good experience being a patient in the same Emergency Room I work in. The care was superb, but it was odd being there with all my co workers and me as a patient.

I have never had any allergic reaction to anything until a month ago. It was not a pleasant experience. Out of the blue I woke up and had a rash all over and had some mild dyspnea.

To call or not to call 911, of course with my medical knowledge I know the best action would be call 911 and seek immediate medical attention for my condition. So what did I do? Got in the car and had someone drive me to the emergency room.

After a lot of benadryl and some steroids, I could breathe once again and was good to go.
I had to take steroids and other medications for a week.

Round two, before I could get into see the allergist, I had yet another reaction. This one was a little worse with the symptoms I had. So once again, I had to decide to call 911 or not and once again I had someone drive me to the emergency room. Now more increased doses of steroids and antihistamines it was once again under control. Now even with all the advances in medicine there is still no way to know what I am reacting too.

Third times a charm, so they say. I had finally got to return to work since the medications had such a strong effect on me I had to miss some work. It was crazy, I felt more than drunk and I don’t drink. I could see why some would like to overdose and abuse certain medications. Some of the effects were so severe, I had syncope. Third time to decide to call 911 or not and once again I was drove to the hospital. After a couple days and seemed liked a couple hundred test, I finally got to go home and doing well right now.

I wanted to take a few minutes and thank everyone for your emails and phone calls and prayers.

Just remember, even though someone should call 911 does not mean they always call 911.
