Can you really be arrested for preaching too loud?

Well to answer that question, yes you can.

Just ask Anthony Lowery, 49, of Lakeland.

Apparently Lowery likes to go to the intersection of Martin Lither King Ave and Memorial Blvd with his sound system and preach.

The police have responded to several complaints about the loud noise.

Well this time once again Lowery was there preaching through his sound system (which consisted of a microphone and two large speakers)

And the local residents and businesses complained of the loud noise.

Officers arrived on scene and since they had dealt with Lowery several times they decided they would issue him a notice to appear for violation of the noise ordinance.
That meant no arrest, just a written promise to appear in court at a later date and time.

Lowery refused and kept on preaching through his sound system just as loud as when the residents and businesses called to complain.

It seems no on cared if he was there preaching, they just had a problem with the volume of his preaching.

Anyway since Lowery refused to turn down his amps, it landed him in jail.

That’s right, the police decided that since Lowery was non-compliant this time they would be better off to give Lowery some time to think about how loud he really wanted to preach at an intersection of town.

Police even told Lowery prior to the arrest if he turned down the volume, he could stay there and preach, but not loud enough to disturb the local residents or businesses in the area.

Oh well, I guess Lowery learned the hard way that it’s ok to preach as long as it’s not too loud.

Lord have mercy, I know some preachers that scream and jump and have one heck of a message in their sermon. I guess I should thank god they don’t preach in Lakeland….

I wonder if it was really the preaching that was a problem or was he stepping on too many toes with the message he had for the members of his community…
