And while we are talking about teenagers that murder
Nyanda Charley, 19, pleaded guilty to killing a security guard last Halloween.
The guard was attempting to break up a group of teens taking place in a Halloween favorite. Egging.
The teens were egging cars at the apartment complex where 53-year-old Neville Webb was working.
As he attempted to break up the group, Nyanda Charley snuck up behind Webb and shot him. Webb was armed but it was reported he never un-holstered his weapon.
Charley faces 20 years to life in prison. Right now he is to be sentenced in December.
Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong, who came to know Webb's family well, said the case illustrates the police's success at solving violent crimes.
"We had a very good case against him," Chong said of Charley, adding that police were able to obtain a videotape of the incident and cooperation from the community that led to Charley's incarceration.
"The community really banded together because this was an innocent man who was doing his job who was quite honestly assassinated," Chong said
Webb, a father of five who emigrated from Jamaica, was working as a security guard at the Oakwood Gardens Apartments on East Lincoln Avenue when he saw the teens engaging in the Halloween prank.
As he approached the group, Charley came up from behind and shot Webb once in the head and once in the chest. Webb, who was armed but never drew his weapon, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where he died.
Charley was arrested four days after the shooting. He apparently had prior run-ins with Webb, who was known as a diligent security guard with work experience as a correction officer in his native Jamaica. His death sparked a weeklong outpouring of outrage and sorrow in the city.
"We in the community (are) relieved to put this ugly episode behind us," Chong said
