This time what happened in Vegas has received national attention and could cause O.J. Simpson the rest of his life.
O.J. Simpson has gone from American Idol to the man acquitted of murder to now convicted felon.
Simpson, now 61, has been convicted of armed robbery, kidnapping and 12 other charges and could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Simpson according to the defense wanted to reclaim property that belonged to him. So Simpson gathered 5 other guys, two of which were armed, and they proceeded to the hotel-casino and stormed a room and proceeded to take game balls, plaques and photos.
According to the defense, Simpson had no knowledge of the men being armed. However, one of the armed men testified that Simpson had told him to bring a gun. (Ooopppsss so much for not knowing at least one of them were armed.)
The verdict came 13 years to the day after Simpson was cleared of murdering his ex-wife and a friend of hers in Los Angeles in one of the most sensational trials of the 20th century. (Well lets say the media called it the most sensational trail of the 20th century, I don’t think there was very much to claim sensational about that trail, after all a murderer walked free.)
Simpson's co-defendant, Clarence "C.J." Stewart, 54, also was found guilty on all charges and taken into custody.
Of course through out the trail the defense claimed Simpson was a victim. That’s right a victim. I guess the defense forgot Simpson gathered the group and asked one to bring a gun. But none the less the defense claimed Simpson was a victim of shady characters who wanted to make a buck off of his name.
The defense also claim Simpson only attempted to take memorabilia that belonged to him. But the prosecution was quick to point out it was still a crime to try to take things by force.
"When they went into that room and forced the victims to the far side of the room, pulling out guns and Simpson yelling, 'Don't let anybody out of here!' -- six very large people detaining these two victims in the room with the intent to take property through force or violence from them -- that's kidnapping," prosecutor David Roger said.
Kidnapping is punishable by five years to life in prison. Armed robbery carries a mandatory sentence of at least two years behind bars, and could bring as much as 30.
The four other men charged in the case struck plea bargains that saved them from potential prison sentences in return for their testimony. Some of them had criminal records or were otherwise compromised in some way. One, for example, was an alleged pimp who testified he had a revelation from God telling him to take a plea bargain.
In closing arguments, defense attorney Yale Galanter acknowledged that what Simpson did to recover his memorabilia was not right. "But being stupid, and being frustrated is not being a criminal," he said.
Wonder if the defense would like to rethink that statement, maybe it should have read, being stupid and committing criminal acts will cost you life in prison.
