Sex with Teachers or Coaches…Donnell Brown arrested for sex with a student
01-16-2009
Once again another adult is arrested for having sex with a 16 year old girl.
Donnell Lamar Brown, 26, was the assistant basketball coach for Eustis High School.
Now he is awaiting trial after posting a $10,000 bond for unlawful sex with a minor.
Apparently the victim’s mother contacted the police after she learned her daughter had a year long relationship with the coach. Apparently the Coach's wife alerted the girls' parents about the relationship and they then notified the police.
Then according to the media Brown confessed and admitted to having sex with the victim numerous times of the course of the year. Apparently they had sex in his car in an orange grove off county road 452.
Now don’t get me wrong at all with this, I know he was wrong for having sex with a minor, but I think it brings up another issue altogether.
We refer to the girl as the victim. Is she really a victim? I mean after all this case went on for over a year. What is she a victim of?
According to some media released the girl said the coach made her feel special and promised to leave his wife once she graduated high school.
I’m a firm believer in the old saying, “it takes two to tango”. Again in no way, shape, form or fashion do I support Brown for having sex with a minor.
But when are we going to look at the child involved in this matter? Is this something she wanted, not that it makes it right by no means of the imagination. Is this something she pursued? At some point she had to say yes, after all he wasn’t charged with rape or kidnapping.
I just think that we need to realize that the girl may not be a “victim”. She apparently was a willing participant and willingly met the coach in the orange grove for the purpose of sex numerous times, not just once or twice to try sex out or see what sex was all about, but numerous times over a year’s time.
Again, make no mistake, I have no sympathies for Brown and he will have to pay the consequences for his actions, but at some point and time I think we need to stop looking at a willing participant as a victim and try to figure out what went wrong and how something like this happened and how can we stop it from happening again.
Was it family problems, lack of family support, no parental guidance? Was it a lack of sexual education? Or lack of guidance at school?
Something else about this case I have to question is how does a minor child have the ability to meet with a 26 year old for over a year and the parents have no clue?
Did the child have the ability to come and go as she pleased and not have to answer to her parent(s) for her actions?
There could be so many explanations and without knowing more than has been released, we may never know. Especially if he takes a plea deal and the case is never tired in court.
It will be interesting to know more about the who, what, when, where and why’s of this case.
