More stupid criminal acts = more prison time for Jaqueal Harris

01/24/2009

Well I have to remember that he is innocent until proven guilty by a jury of his peers.

But this St. Pete teenager has set the course of the rest of his natural life to take place in prison.

I’m not sure if you remember the recent post about Jaqueal Harris, he was recently arrested for several armed robberies and his parents were his get-a-way car driver during his last robbery where he and a friend robbed a local convenience store.

With Harris already in jail, investigators did not have to look long for him when they received information about Harris being involved in a murder.

A witness came forward and identified Harris as the man that shot and killed Clarence Mitchell, Jr. last October. Mitchell, 37, was gunned down at the front door of his house on 13th Ave. S.

The witness also identified Harris as the person who had been involved in a fight with Mitchell earlier that week.

Seems that Harris has already passed his 3 strikes and you’re out rule and now will be facing the rest of his life in prison.

How sad. We have lost yet another teenager to crime and violence. When will people actually start taking corrective action and stop waiting for something to happen before they get involved?

This case makes me believe that some people should not be parents. If people cannot teach their own children the basic morals and characters of doing the right thing, then we are doomed as society.

People want the rights to say and do anything they want, but somewhere along the way we have to teach right from wrong and ensure the right things are being done as we live our own life. Granted we cannot change everyone in the world, but I cannot believe this teen did not have problems well before the murder and no one done nothing to help him succeed in life. Now the rest of his life will be spent in prison.

People claim they are scared to get involved and they have a right to be scared. But at some point we the people have to also ensure the right things are being done to ensure our own safety. People have to start getting involved.

At the same token, we have certain groups that we have witnessed in St. Pete that came to town on one case and tried to instill fear and distrust in the police to the people of St. Petersburg. Yet we wonder why we have such problems that we have today.

That case is a prime example of certain people wanting to keep the racial problems alive in the world today. A good friend of mine that I used to work with use to be very active in supporting the rights of blacks in the community became so disgusted with this protest that she said she had never been so angry that they pulled the discrimination card right off the bat.

This all goes back to personal responsibility as well. Instead of coming to town and saying what can we do to help get to the truth of this case, they came in and tried to create fear and make people believe the police could not be trusted. Yet we still have people wondering why there are problems in the world today.

At some point and time we do have to stand united and work out our problems. But as we sit back and just wait, we will continue to see more teenagers lose their life to crime and violence.
