Mark Maupin, a 28 year veteran of the Altamonte Springs Police Department, was found guilty of failure to use due care and not wearing a seatbelt when he crashed his patrol car last November.
Maupin decided to resign from the police force during the accident investigation.
During the investigation it was discovered that Maupin was traveling at 104 mph when he slammed into the back of a Honda Civic that was stopped at a red light.
Maupin was not going on a call and did not have his emergency lights or siren on at the time of the crash.
The driver and passenger of the Civic were critically injured.
The driver suffered from a skull fracture and her passenger a 20 year old male was left in a coma.
The families of the victims were hoping for an apology of some sort from Maupin, but Maupin did not even appear in court. His attorney appeared for him.
Maupin will lose his license and now that he has been found guilty he will be sentenced on Sept. 14.

This case is such a joke. I don't know how POS Maupin, his attorney or the Judge sleep at night. Not to mention the coverup by FHP. If this had been an ordinary citizen, they would still be locked up awaiting trial. But all this POS got is a suspended license and a $1000 fine. What's even worse is the City of Altamonte Springs allowing him to resign and not firing this sorry bastard. Now the taxpayers have had to pay him all his vacation time and a pension, while young Erskin Bell Jr., remains in a coma and his family must take care of him. What a travesty of justice!!!

And to allow him to resign and not be fired.

Why do we pay anyone that breaks the law? And/Or found guilty in a court of law?
I personally think that any public safety official (Police, Fire, EMS) that gets arrested they should be fired on the spot. PERIOD.
No benefits, no pay, nothing.
These people are the very people that we must entrust our lives too and yet they do whatever they want and we still have to pay the price of their criminal activities.
These people make a decision to break the law and should have to pay the price just like anyone else. Once they break the law they should lose everything that you and I would lose.
I also disagree with the “light” punishment he received in court, a suspended license… Is that the best the court could do…? That is a joke.
What bothers me more about this case is the fact they allowed him to never appear in court. If that was anyone else we would have to be there facing our accusers.
