2 teenagers’ lost their life,1 was murdered and 1 sent to prison for 2 life terms.

Demarlis Melvin was 18 at the time of the crime. Melvin shot and killed Mike Smith III, also 18 years old.

Melvin was convicted in court for murder and was sentenced on Monday to 2 life terms in prison without the possibility of parole.

The murder took place in May 2006

The courtroom drama was abundant. The mother of Smith wanted Melvin to get the death penalty for the murder of her son. The mother said she wanted the mother of Melvin to feel the same pain she has felt over losing a child.

Smith’s mother, Breeshell Devine, said she was sure Demarlis got to tell his mom happy mothers day while all she could do was sit at the grave site and wish and hope to hear her sons’ voice again.

Smith was outside a St. Petersburg, FL apartment when Melvin pulled up in a car and Melvin started some type of confrontation because he was from a rival neighborhood.

Sound like a good reason to shot and kill someone right? I’m from another neighborhood, I should kill you. What the…

Why do people commit such senseless crimes? Surely there had to be something more than I am from a different neighborhood. Is that really a reason to shoot into a crowd of teenagers? I just don’t understand this at all. But that’s just me…

Melvin left the scene at first and later he returned and that’s when Melvin started shooting into the crowd striking Smith.

It was reported that Melvin and Smith did not know each other.

Yet we have another senseless crime that took the life of yet another teenager.

As you know I agree if any person takes a life, they should die as well. But for whatever reason the courts decided to give him 2 life sentences without the possibility of parole.

With the conflict between the Melvin’s and Smith’s after the sentence was handed down, the police had to escort the Smith family out of the courtroom to ensure there was no violence between the families.

Maybe in his 2 life terms Melvin will have ample time to figure out what he done wrong.

But of course with the drug trade and criminal enterprise in prison he might be too busy to even think about the errors of his ways.

To the Jakester first i want to thank you for printing my story!!!! I still don't get why these young men want to play with guns. But i feel that if i keep marching and telling my story i'll help save some mother from going through what i have to deal with everyday. If i can save one i just might beable to save a hundred. And once again I truely thank you. Breeshell Devine (the mother of Mike Smith)
